The promise

Every January the outlooks arrive: where rates land, what the dollar does, what the sector can expect. Every December nobody goes back to grade them. The forecasting business doesn't survive on being right. It survives on how much we enjoy buying it.

And the trouble isn't that forecasts miss. It's that we build companies, careers and household finances that only work if the forecast lands. This is where this body of ideas makes an unusual move: instead of improving the guess, it proposes inspecting the plumbing. It writes off the question of what will happen and concentrates on one that can be answered today — if anything at all happens, what does it cost me, and who pays?

That second question is the axis of this explainer. We don't follow the book's map or its categories. We sorted the ideas by the owner of the loss, because every bill for disorder has one. We open with the bill signed by someone who won't be paying it, stop to measure how large these bills get, and go on to the three that are yours: the one charged today in small installments, the one nobody pays because you capped it before starting, and the one that arrives later and all at once.
