The promise
Every February, in some district office, a committee reads four hundred scholarship applications across two afternoons and decides which thirty applicants have the makings of something. It isn't a careless committee. It looks at what there is to look at — a grade average, a one-page statement, twelve minutes of interview — and it picks. Ten years later, when someone asks why those thirty went somewhere, the answer we all give is: because they were good.
This book exists to take that answer apart. Its wager is that much of what we call exceptional ability is explained by circumstances the person never chose and nobody audits: which month they were born, who lent them the equipment, how the adults in their house speak to authority. And the consequence is more interesting than the diagnosis, because circumstances can be redesigned.
That is where our ordering comes from, and it is ours rather than the author's: four circumstances lined up by radius of action, from the one you can adjust by yourself this week to the one that won't budge without rewriting an institution's rulebook. The criterion has a price, so here it is: two of the book's claims are left out — the one about successful cohorts clustering inside very narrow birth ranges, elegant for explaining the past and useless for deciding anything tomorrow, and the one about exclusion ripening into specialization. Both are in the book. Neither is below.

Traffic engineers call it a green wave. On a long arterial with nine signalized intersections, the lights don't change at random: they're offset from each other by a few calculated seconds, so a car entering at exactly the right moment catches green after green to the end. Enter in phase and you never touch the brake. Enter forty seconds later and you catch red at every single one, because each stop pushes you further out of step with the next.
