The promise
It's eleven at night, you have a meeting in the morning, and your head is still litigating something that happened at four in the afternoon. You tell yourself to stop thinking about it, and the thing gets louder. Nobody in the history of the species has ever won a frontal argument with their own mind, and yet it is the first thing all of us try, every night, for decades.
This book walked up to that problem in 1908, out of a Chicago publishing house, sold as wisdom from pharaonic Egypt. The genealogy was invented. The technical proposal is not silly: it claims an inner state doesn't get switched off, it gets moved, and that the moving has rules. We don't follow the book's order here, and we don't grant that its seven pieces are worth the same. We picked five and ranked them by how much weight they hold. And we start by taking off the costume, because the costume was part of the argument.
The idea in one image
Walk into a paint store with a tinting machine. There's a white base in the can, a rack of colorant syringes, and a fan deck with two hundred named rectangles: sand, bone, linen, alabaster. Nobody comes to the counter asking to have the green removed from a green. You ask for a different point on the scale. And if you open that fan deck slowly you'll see the important thing: the border between "sand" and "bone" doesn't exist in the paint. It exists in the deck. Somebody cut names out of a continuum so it could be sold.
